This is a great thread. I just finished my CCW class and the instructor went in-depth on this same issue (carrying ready to fire versus racking, disengaging safeties, etc.). Before the class, I had already resolved to carry condition 1 and things like this just help me realize my thoughts are correct.
The only safety that you should have engaged is YOU. |

I will qualify that statement by saying that if you carry a single action only weapon (i.e. a 1911), you should always have the manual safety engaged. WIth the 1911 it is incredibly easy to condition yourself to naturally disengage the manual safety when you draw the weapon. |
